“Away”, a Quechua word meaning to sew, is an apt title for this cooperative of five women, Sofia, Mirtha, Rosmery, Hilda & Yeseni, almost all single mums who have successfully established their own business.
For two years, a local order of nuns provided professional and personal training and support on all aspects of running a sewing business, from product design to self esteem and women as entrepreneurs. After this the group felt ready to embark on their own and Away Confecciones moved out and rented their own space. With their earnings, little by little, they bought materials and machines and made and sold dolls, soft toys and local school uniforms.
“The good thing is to have work and to be able to provide for our families. I work to give a better life to my children and fight for this every day.“ Sofia Garcia, President.
"Our work with Llamarama is a circle of friendship and trust. With each order and the work it brings, we are able to improve our lives a little and we hope our llamas sell very quickly!" Mirtha Sanchez.
