In the Highlands of Peru, men and women work hard to live from their chakra farms on the hill slopes. The work is tough and all the family are needed to help. Caritas have helped the women of these villages to find an alternative way of making money through establishing women's groups that handloom wool & cotton using traditional weaving methods. The design team then work with these communities to transform natural weaves into unique classic handbags. Each bag is individually hand-embroidered with Amazonian flowers & plants.
Partnership with Llamarama guarantees a fair price and an alternative source of income to agriculture and the interest in the project has led to support from the local council through building and equipping new workshops. There are now 18 villages involved.
Not only does this work help the women to proudly preserve their local weaving traditions, improve their income and still help out on the farm but the groups have also become social hubs where the village women can meet and spend time together and this is something they greatly value.
"All the women in the village come and ask if they can come and weave. With fixed orders from Llamarama we are able to offer more women work. We are happy, we have fun and we have lots of ideas for our community" Rosio Chavez, President of Virgin de Fatima Artisan Association.
